Williams, Mason, A Gift of Song

In 1968, Mason Williams was riding high. Not only was he one of the writers for the highly successful, albeit controversial, Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, but he also wrote and performed the format-bending, insturmental pop hit "Classical Gas." The record earned Williams two Grammys that year for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Instrumental Performance. Throughout his career, he has recorded over a dozen albums, including the one that features a re-cut of "Gas" for American Gramophone in 1988." -- Fred Goodman, Cash Box.
