Levine, Mark, Off & On, the Music of Moacir Santos

Grammy-Nominee Mark Levine & The Latin Tinge (Best Latin Jazz Recording, 2003) return with Off & On, the Music of Moacir Santos, a tribute to a true 20th-century Brazilian genius, although one not very well known in the USA. 2010 will be the Year Of Moacir Santos, as Lincoln Center will present a concert of his music on May 28, 2010. As esteemed Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos-Neto has said of Moacir, “He really tapped a very African source of Brazilian music in his writing. His music, even though it is sophisticated, has a very visceral quality in its rhythms and melodies.” “I was lucky to work with Moacir in Los Angeles, and even luckier when Moacir asked me to play piano on his Blue Note recording Saudade. Neither of his Blue Note recordings, Maestro, nor the aforementioned “Saudade” has ever been re-released on CD, In fact, Blue Note lost the masters. As such, our recording will be the only recording entirely of Moacir’s music available anywhere, other than his own albums.” Mark Levine
