Adnet, Mario/ Philippe Baden Powell, AfroSambaJazz: The Music of Baden Powell

The Afro Sambas composed by Baden Powell between the mid-1960s and the beginning of the 1980s represent one the most beautiful and impressive group of songs in Brazilian popular music. Now, four decades after the first of recording of these songs on the classic LP with Vinicius de Moraes [Os Afro Sambas, 1966], arrangers, instrumentalists and producers Mario Adnet and Philippe Baden Powell return to this extraordinary musician’s series of compositions, interweaving well-known tunes with previously unknown works. The result of their labor is the CD Afrosambajazz (Adventure Music), which demonstrates that the music that emerged from the guitar and talent of Baden Powell has an inexhaustible potential for reinterpretation. Afrosambajazz highlights fundamental pearls from the incomparable work of Baden Powell, reaffirming the synthesis between his music and that of the great Moacir Santos. And if that were still not enough, Adnet and Philippe Baden Powell (his son) introduce, for the first time publically, some of the great Brazilian guitar master’s previously unknown compositions, preserved for many years in the family trunk. This is only one of a thousand reasons that Afrosambajazz must be considered a classic album, essential for any appreciative music lover.– Charles Gavin [drummer and record producer]
